Welcome to HENS (Home Essentials Newcomer Support), a dedicated grassroots initiative committed to supporting newcomer families as they begin their journey in Canada. We recognize that many newcomers arrive with minimal possessions and face significant challenges as they settle into their new environment. Our mission is to bridge these gaps by providing essential household items such as seasonal clothing, shoes, kitchenware, bedding and bath accessories, and some furniture to help ease the transition, enabling families to establish safe, functional homes as they settle into their new lives

Our Mission
To provide meaningful, low-barrier settlement support to refugees and newcomer families in Toronto by offering essential household items, resources, and assistance. Through compassionate service and community engagement, HENS empowers families as they transition into their new lives, fostering stability, resilience, and a sense of belonging. The organization bridges gaps in support, promotes inclusivity, and helps reduce waste by reusing donations, ensuring every newcomer feels welcomed and equipped to thrive in their new community.
What We Do
At HENS we:
Distribute essential household items to families in need.
Run educational workshops tailored to newcomers, including culturally responsive programs on parenting, navigating local systems, and community resources.
Engage in environmentally friendly practices by reusing and repurposing donations to reduce waste and prevent items from ending up in landfills.
Provide a platform for volunteers to gain meaningful skills and contribute positively to the community.

Our team, including newcomers who have walked the same path (as recent as April 2024), understands the complexities of resettlement and is dedicated to fostering resilience and belonging.

We strive to be a leader in newcomer support, inspiring hope, fostering independence, and creating strong, connected communities where everyone can thrive. As we grow, we aim to expand our services to operate five days a week and extend our reach throughout Toronto.

Monetary funds can be donated to help towards delivery of items to families via The Donway Covenant United Church at the link below. A tax receipt will be provided. Please mark all donations for "HENS".
